How has the current situation helped the planet?

Hello, my name is Gabriela Escaño and today I will talk to you about how the current situation has helped the planet.

Deforestation, environmental pollution, the exploitation of fossil fuels, plastic pollution and the unsustainable way in which cities work are some of the global battles that, according to Greenpeace, urgent measures are taken to avoid devastating effects on the environment and on populations at the end of the coronavirus pandemic.

"In the current context of health crisis we must not forget about caring for the planet. The world continues to experience extreme events in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. Climate change does not quarantine and the pandemic has only come to reveal the situation of a planet that has been ill for too long, "said Silvia Gómez, director of Greenpeace Colombia.

For Greenpeace, the key to facing this climate crisis is in global cooperation. “Climate change has made it clear that it knows no borders, that it affects all of humanity equally and that only coordinated and determined actions are those that produce relevant changes. We must continue united to overcome this crisis. Our actions and our commitment must live up to the problem, "said Gómez.

According to calculations by the Center for Research in Energy and Clean Air (CREA) in the United States, the closure of factories and shops in China, as well as the restrictions on air transfers imposed (it is estimated that around 5% of the world's pollution belongs to aircraft) has produced a decrease in CO2 emissions of at least 25%, due to a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels such as oil, gas or coal, among others, a figure that represents, globally, a reduction of approximately 6%.
